Summer Camp
Welcome to High Prairie Wilderness Camp
Are You Ready for the Adventure?
Yearly Dates: July 30-Aug 5; Aug 7-16; August 18-24
Where: 50 minutes south of High Prairie on Highway 41, or 25 minutes north of Valleyview, in New Fish Creek. We are located in a beautiful treed area bordering crown lease land with miles of local trails throughout the area! A map with directions is sent as part of the registration package.
Experience Level: Beginner to Advanced. We have horses for campers who have never ridden to campers who are experienced riders, so there is a horse for everyone! For campers who are spending their first time away at camp, we recommend starting with one of our 7-day camp options. For campers from previous years, or campers with previous camp experience, the 10-day camp offers even more fun, more rides, and perhaps even a crack at our Camp Olympics!
Here is a quick overview of how we grade camper riding abilities. Please note this is also on the registration form. Careful attention to this will help us create a better experience for your youth who is attending camp. Because we assign campers to horses with personalities and attitudes that match the camper’s riding ability, understanding the following information is a key part in a successful and fun HPWC camp experience.
- Beginner: No consistent horse experience, but has perhaps ridden a few times with family or friends. Does not know how to saddle/unsaddle, and is not very familiar with basic riding skills.
- Intermediate: Can saddle/bridle, but may need assistance. Confident getting on/off and ride at a walk. Knows basic commands of walk, stop, and turning. Understands basic horsemanship. May ride throughout the year.
- Advanced: Confident to saddle/bridle, get on/off, and ride at a walk/trot. Understands and can implement commands such as go, stop, turn, back-up, and can handle some minor corrective riding, such as directing your horse back in line or confidently pulling his head up to stop him from eating. Rides occasionally or consistently throughout the year.
Activities: Horseback riding, games, riding lessons, AMAZING food, living in a tipi, chores, and chapel sessions!
A Day in the Life of an HPWC Camper....
When Sandra gets to camp, she will be greeted by one of our friendly staff members. It may even be our staff in this photo!
After settling in her tipi and meeting her tipi leaders, Sandra joins the rest of the camp for a time of games. Before long, its supper time, chore time, games, and then chapel, followed by bedtime.
When they get back from the ride, Sandra’s group joins for Tipi Time, followed by group games, supper, chores, and chapel.
At the end of the day, she can hardly believe the day is over and can’t wait for tomorrow!
